Main purpose and mechanism of action

The core of the application of cyclodextrin in this field is to exert its adhesive and process auxiliary functions.

As a binder

Advantage: Provides good initial forming strength. During the drying stage of wet grinding tools (before sintering), the adhesive force of cyclodextrin can effectively prevent the collapse and deformation of the blank, and maintain the integrity of the edges and corners.

As a process aid

Thickening and Suspension: In water-based abrasive slurries, cyclodextrin can play a role in thickening and suspension, making the abrasive particles evenly distributed and less prone to precipitation.

Easy to remove: Cyclodextrin belongs to organic temporary binders. In the final high-temperature sintering process of the grinding tool, it will completely burn, decompose, and evaporate without leaving any residue, which avoids the influence of residue on the purity, hardness, and structure of the final product.

Specific application scenarios

Ceramic grinding tools: widely used in the manufacture of grinding wheels, grindstones, etc. Yellow cyclodextrin, as a part of the binder, ensures that the abrasive is well shaped before sintering.

Coated grinding tools: When manufacturing sandpaper and sandpaper cloth, they can be used as additives for the base or cover adhesive to enhance the initial adhesion of the abrasive to the substrate.

Refractory grinding tools and irregular grinding tools: When manufacturing refractory grinding tools or irregular grinding tools with complex shapes, their role in 'angle and edge preservation' is particularly important.

Casting industry: Although not entirely a grinding tool, it is used in sand casting to bond molding sand and make sand cores, with similar principles.

Precautions for use

The dosage needs to be precise: as an additive, it should be strictly used according to the process ratio, and excessive use may affect subsequent sintering.

Moisture proof storage: Yellow dextrin is easily soluble in water and must be sealed and stored in a dry environment.

Coordination with other binders: In high-performance grinding tools, cyclodextrin is often used in combination with permanent binders such as ceramics (such as clay), metals, or resins. It mainly undertakes the temporary bonding task during the molding stage, and the final performance is determined by the permanent bonding agent.
